Regarding container capacity, what is the typical loading capacity for a 20-feet container and a 40-feet container? (logs, lumber)
The volume of a container is about 66m3 for a 40-foot container, and about 32m3 for a 20-foot container. The maximum loading capacity varies depending on the specific gravity of the material, but I understand that it is about 1/2 the volume for green material and 2/3 for KD material.

Export to Korea
What is the wood supply situation in Korea?
South Korea's timber self-sufficiency rate is around 16%, far lower than Japan's. Pine accounts for about 70% of the tree species, and there are also broadleaf trees. Although the amount of artificial forests is gradually increasing, the amount is still only about one-fifth of Japan's. As a result, the current situation is that the country relies heavily on imports for timber. Import sources are diverse, including North America, Europe, and Japan. (September 2022)
Could you please give us an overview of Korea's housing industry?
The Korean wooden housing industry has about 8,000-9,000 detached houses started per year, most of which are frame construction. It is estimated that about 100 frame constructions are started per year, but the exact number is unknown due to the lack of proper statistical information. (September 2022)
Are wood products manufactured and used in Korea in accordance with manufacturing standards such as JAS standards?
When I asked the Korea Forestry Institute this question (information exchange), I received the following information. The Korean "Enforcement Decree of the Law on Sustainable Use of Wood" specifies the quality of 15 types of materials. The 15 types are: 1) lumber, 2) preservative wood, 3) flame-retardant wood, 4) wood-plastic composites, 5) laminated lumber, 6) plywood, 7) particle board, 8) fiberboard, 9) oriented strand board, 10) wood flooring, 11) wood pellets, 12) wood chips, 13) wood briquettes, 14) molded charcoal, and 15) charcoal. The Korea Forestry Institute has created an appendix of the specifications and quality standards for these 15 types of materials. The Industrial Standardization Act (KoreanStandard) is aligned with ISO and also refers to Japan's JAS. Even if Japan's JAS-certified wood is imported, it does not mean that "JAS wood = usable" in principle, and in reality, it seems that it is okay as long as it is manufactured with proper quality control and checked when imported. There seems to be an HWP (certified timber) check, but it seems that there is an agreement that it is OK if one document is attached. There is also an overseas inspection system, which seems to be equivalent to the individual certification system. (Information exchange at the Korea Forestry Academy in September 2022)
Timber export to India
What is the wood consumption in India?
According to FAO data from 2018, the consumption of sawn timber per 1,000 people in the highly populous China is 89 m3, while in India it is quite low at 6 m3. If India were to use at the same level as Japan (118 m3), it would need an additional 150 million m3, which would require an increase in sawn timber production of more than 30% of the world's consumption of 500 million m3 (based on the results of a market survey of India conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Export International Bureau's Product Group Emergency Support Project in FY2022).
What is the demand for timber in India?
India's timber demand is divided into three categories: construction, packaging, and interior materials. 99% of construction materials are softwoods from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, and Uruguay. Packaging materials require slightly higher grade KD timber than construction materials. They are mainly imported from Europe, and since China's economy is currently in a slump, they are imported at low prices. European timber C and D is imported to India, and A and B timber is imported to Japan. For the base material of packaging materials, poorly maintained radiata pine and loblolly pine logs from Uruguay are used, and for slightly better quality packaging materials, logs are imported from Australia and New Zealand. Southern yellow pine logs are also imported from the United States, but radiata pine from Chile is not logs due to sea freight charges, and small amounts of KD lumber are imported in containers. Interior materials such as flooring and wall materials are sourced directly from Europe, and it seems that there are high expectations from Japan as well (from the results of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Export International Bureau, Product Group Emergency Support Project, India Market Survey (conducted in 2023)).
What is the current situation regarding timber imports in India?
According to UN data for 2022, India's timber import situation is as follows: Imports of softwood logs are 5.9 million m3, followed by the United States 2.54 million m3, South Africa 1.07 million m3, Uruguay 1.03 million m3, Australia 840,000 m3, and Argentina 310,000 m3. Imports of softwood sawn timber products are 720,000 m3, with half coming from Germany (370,000 m3), Austria 60,000 m3, the United States 40,000 m3, Sweden 40,000 m3, and Russia 30,000 m3. Imports of hardwood logs are 2.15 million m3, followed by Malaysia 480,000 m3, Colombia 260,000 m3, Ghana 250,000 m3, Ecuador 230,000 m3, Solomon Islands 170,000 m3, and Panama 120,000 m3. Imports of hardwood lumber were 1.26 million m3, followed by Croatia 230,000 m3, Germany 210,000 m3, Côte d'Ivoire 110,000 m3, Togo 80,000 m3, Benin 80,000 m3, and Ecuador 60,000 m3.
